Happy Australia Day 2012!  This Australia Day, the Blue Bird Family decided to head off to the Highfields Pioneer Village in our hometown of Highfields, just north of Toowoomba on the Darling Downs.  While we have visited the Village before, there are always new things to see and ones that you may have missed before!  Australia Day is a wonderful day to visit the museum and to witness the old farm machinery in working order.  As a girl who grew up on a Family Farm that had seen four generations live at the one property, I find these trips to the Highfields Pioneer Village not only interesting but a wonderful reminder of the old farm machinery, engines and buildings that I was used to seeing on a daily basis growing up on a family property.  It is truly wonderful that so many volunteers not only take their time to preserve the equipment, but also to those who donate these items for all to enjoy.

Delicious Australia Day Morning Tea - Fresh made camp oven Damper with Billy Tea!
The Children enjoyed the Dairy Display with in the Historic Russell & Sons Dairy.  They witnessed the cows being milked, the milk and cream being seperated and then the cream being turned into butter in the historic cream shed.  How fantastic it is to see this original dairy, and to also come to the realization that the Toowoomba Business of Russell and Sons is still thriving today!

Now it would be wrong of me not to mention one of the other main attractions at Highfields Pioneer Village.... THE FOOD!  The Children enjoyed large servings of Home-made pancakes with extra helpings of Icecream and Maple Syrup, while we enjoyed the delicious camp-oven Damper (made with local organic Kialla Flour), topped with butter and golden syrup, and delicious Billy Tea.  (See pic above)

I loved this Historic Telephone Box at Highfields Pioneer Village, 26/01/12
If you missed out on attending the Australia Day Festivities at Highfields this year, you can see the village any time as it is open daily from 10am to 4pm.  The Next Big Day is the Easter Vintage Festival Sat-Mon 7-9 April 2012 where you can see everything in working order.

Happy Australia Day, I hope you have taken the time to enjoy the wonderful things our beautiful Country has to Offer.
